The 7 Golden Rules of EVE Online
Over the past two decades of EVE Online’s history, capsuleers have discovered that survival has very little to do with raw Skill Points and everything to do with personal discipline.
Every veteran pilot lives by these 7 Golden Rules. Commit them to memory:
Never Fly What You Cannot Afford to Lose
The cardinal directive of New Eden. Never fly what you cannot afford to lose.
The second your ship leaves the docking bay, consider it already destroyed. In EVE, starships are not sacred character sheets or permanent trophies—they are disposable tools and ammunition. If losing a ship wipes out your wallet balance or causes emotional distress, leave it docked and fly a cheaper hull instead.
You Consent to PvP the Moment You Undock
There are no “safe zones” in EVE Online outside of the Exordium starter systems.
High-security space does not make you invulnerable. CONCORD is a police force dedicated to punitive retribution, not prevention. If a pirate fleet calculates that your cargo is worth more than the cost of their disposable suicide ships, they will destroy you in highsec within seconds. Always assume someone on grid is plotting your demise.
Never Use Autopilot
Never use autopilot. Using in-game autopilot is the single most reliable way to donate your ship and cargo to pirate gankers.
When autopilot is active, your ship warps to stargates at a distance of 10 to 15 kilometers away, rather than landing at 0 km. Your ship must then spend 20 to 45 seconds slowly burning toward the gate at sub-warp speed. During this crawl, suicide gankers have more than enough time to scan your cargo hold, lock your ship, and obliterate you. Always warp to 0 km and jump manually!
Situational Awareness & Button Pushing Beat Raw ISK
An expensive multi-billion ISK faction ship will lose every single time to an inexpensive, well-flown tech-1 frigate if the expensive pilot lacks manual piloting skill.
Knowing your ship’s optimal range, angular tracking velocity, capacitor recharge peak, and overheated module thresholds matters far more than how much ISK you dumped into your fitting.
Bigger Is Often Worse (The Size Fallacy)
A Battleship is not an “upgrade” over a Cruiser, and a Cruiser is not an “upgrade” over a Frigate.
Each ship class in EVE fills a specialized tactical doctrine. Heavy battleships have massive signature radii, slow align times, and sluggish gun tracking that cannot hit fast-moving frigates or destroyers. Faster, smaller hulls frequently dictate the terms of engagement and hold tackle with impunity.
Never Trust Anyone You Cannot Physically Punch
Espionage, corporate theft, infiltration, contract scams, and betrayal are completely legal within the sandbox of New Eden.
If a deal in Jita local chat sounds too good to be true (“Double your ISK!”), it is a scam 100% of the time. Never grant hangar director access to unvetted strangers, and never transport uncollateralized courier packages without double-checking the destination contract mechanics.
Try, Die, and Repeat
Destruction is the primary engine of EVE Online. Ships exploding creates market demand, drives mining, fuels manufacturing, and produces unforgettable stories.
Do not fear ship loss—embrace it as tuition. When you die, open the combat log, send a polite message to the pilot who killed you asking what you did wrong (veterans will almost always explain their tactics and often refund your ship cost!), and undock again.
